The original construction of the wooden porch and entry to the oldest building on campus had deteriorated beyond repair, and suffered from a 1970’s gold anodized aluminum storefront enclosure.

The East Entry Porch was reconstructed based on research of the original design and included detailed replication of the original ornamentation, restoration of the formerly hidden original doors, new period lighting, and “Osa,” the Bear.

In researching the original architect’s designs, a construction method utilizing glass fiber reinforced concrete was the chosen strategy.

The project received a prestigious Berkeley Architectural Heritage Award (BAHA) from the City of Berkeley.
